Everything you need to know about teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is an accessible cosmetic dentistry option for almost every patient, and is universally safe and effective because rather than mask discolouration, it brings out the natural whiteness in teeth by neutralising pigments and stains.

Most clinical teeth whitening treatments typically begin with a consultation where your gums and teeth are assessed, and the solution most appropriate to your needs advised. Your goals and likely results of the teeth whitening solutions are discussed, so you’re clear of the outcome.

A teeth whitening treatment begins with a deep clean of your teeth to rid them of all bacteria and food particles that could interfere with the whitening process.

Types of teeth whitening treatments

There are a number of different teeth whitening procedures available today, some take longer than others, some involve treatments at home while others can be completed after a single visit to a dental clinic. Here are some of the most commonly used teeth whitening treatments.

  • Whitening toothpastes. Most teeth whitening toothpastes contain low levels of bleaching agents such as peroxide that lighten the colour of your teeth. They contain mild abrasives that are used to scrub your teeth. You also get teeth whitening rinses with similar ingredients.

  • At-home whitening kits. These can be bought over the counter and their efficacy is dependent on the amount of peroxide in them. They contain pens that have a whitening gel that you paint over your teeth, strips that fit over your front teeth and trays that look like mouth guards and contain whitening gel that works on your teeth while you wear the tray. There are also some take-home whitening trays dentists provide that are custom made for your needs. Their use and how long they take to whiten your teeth depends on the strength to which your dentist makes these.

  • Laser teeth whitening. This is a short procedure that results in teeth being immediately and noticeably whiter. At Dentist Auckland NZ we use the latest techniques to ensure you see quick results, safely.

For long-term, consistent results, sometimes a combination of in-home and in-chair treatments is suggested. Your dentist is best placed to advise the treatment that would work with your unique dental make-up and lifestyle.

Are there any risks associated with teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is not recommended for children under 15 years and during pregnancy.

It is generally a very safe procedure although you need to be vary of some side effects, including tooth sensitivity, which can last a few days. You’re more likely to experience it if you have sensitive teeth. You may also experience gum irritation.

Smile Makeovers

Your Smile Makeover

If you feel beautiful, you look beautiful. Do you have the confidence of owning a beautiful smile? Or does your smile make you shy to face the camera or the outside world?

A good smile is very important to have an attractive personality. You can win the hearts of many if you have a good smile. If missing, broken, chipped or crooked teeth make your smile shabby, you will always have a low feeling about yourself. This can have a deleterious effect on your overall performance. You need not live with your imperfections.

Our team at Dentist Auckland have the latest technology and know the leading techniques to give you that perfect smile.  It can be as simple as cleaning and polishing or whitening the teeth to more complex work with veneers or crowns to make your teeth cosmetically appealing.

In the first session with one of our dentists, a thorough examination and evaluation of your teeth will be done.  Xrays and photographs may also be taken. A treatment plan with all options and associated costs will be presented to you so that you can make the decision thats right for you.

Veneers

Veneers are thin layers of tooth coloured material that are used to conceal discolorations on teeth, modify the shape of teeth or rectify gaps in between teeth. Only a small amount of tooth material is drilled off to roughen the surface. The veneer is glued to the teeth and your teeth become brighter and better!

Dental Veneers

Typically manufactured from medical-grade ceramic, dental veneers are made individually for each patient to resemble one's natural teeth. They look exceptionally realistic and can resolve numerous cosmetic problems, ranging from crooked teeth, to cracked or damaged enamel to noticeable gaps between two teeth.

Other cosmetic dentistry procedures

There are a number of other procedures we undertake at Dentist Auckland NZ group to help improve your confidence and give you a perfect smile.

Reshaping teeth with veneers

If you feel that your teeth are too pointy, worn down, or oddly shaped, a cosmetic dentist can use one of many cosmetic dentistry techniques to reshape your teeth for a more pleasing look. Porcelain veneers are often used because they can be shaped exactly as you and your cosmetic dentist decide.

Restoring damaged teeth using veneers or crowns

Porcelain veneers and dental crowns are often used to restore damaged teeth, typically caused by years of wear and tear or even an accident.

Veneers Case Study

One of our clients, a 35 year old female patient had chipped off teeth with blackish discoloration. She felt quite low because of her teeth. She was anxious about the procedure, but was relaxed due to our dentists tender approach.

Crowns

Dental crowns are used to strengthen and restore teeth that are decayed, disintegrated or broken. A crown is a strong material made of either porcelain or ceramic that covers the tooth providing strength and stability to the tooth. At Dentist Auckland group based in Milford, we offer Cerec Same Day Crown technology. A digital scan allows us to take a virtual impression of the tooth and have the crown made in our office and fit on the same day. For patient comfort and ease, we offer the latest inovative Cerec Crown technology.

Replace missing teeth with implants, crowns or dentures

Whether you have a few tooth gaps or a mouthful of missing teeth, a cosmetic dentist can restore your smile with natural looking tooth restorations. Dental implantsdental crownsdental bridges, and dentures have all been used successfully to fill unsightly gaps in smiles.

Inlays and Onlays

These are also known as indirect fillings, which are made by a dental laboratory, and they are used when a tooth has mild to moderate decay or there is not enough tooth structure to support a filling. The fillings are made in a dental laboratory an attached to the teeth using dental cement.

Composite Bonding

Composite bonding refers to the repair of decayed, damaged or discoloured teeth using material that resembles the colour of tooth enamel. Your dentist drills out the tooth decay and applies the composite onto the tooth's surface, then "sculpts" it into the right shape before curing it with a high-intensity light.
